The UK operates a points-based immigration system for most nationalities. Here is a comprehensive guide to the main visa routes available in 2026.

Skilled Worker Visa

The primary work visa for people offered a qualifying job in the UK. Requirements: a job offer from a licensed sponsor, salary of at least £38,700 per year (or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher), and English language proficiency.

Some shortage occupations have lower salary thresholds. Healthcare workers, engineers, and some digital roles may qualify at lower salaries.

Skilled Worker visas are granted for up to 5 years and can lead to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) after 5 years' continuous residence.

Student Visa

For studying a full-time course at a UK Higher Education Institution. Requirements: an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor, financial proof, and English language requirements.

Students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time in holidays.

Graduate Visa

Allows international graduates from UK universities to remain and work in the UK for 2 years after graduation (3 years for doctoral graduates). No salary threshold and no requirement for a sponsor employer.

Family Visa

For those joining a British citizen or settled person in the UK. The sponsor must meet an income threshold of £29,000 per year (rising to £38,700 by 2025). Applicants must meet English language requirements.

Costs and Timescales

Skilled Worker visa: application fee of £719 (3 years) or £1,420 (5 years), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year.

Student visa: £490 application fee plus IHS.

Processing times for out-of-country applications: typically 3-8 weeks for standard service.
