Several changes to driving licences and DVLA processes take effect in 2026.
Digital Driving Licence
The DVLA is rolling out a digital driving licence app. The digital version can be used for age verification and certain proof of identity purposes.
Important: the digital licence supplements, but does not replace, your physical photocard. You must still carry the physical licence when driving.
Photocard Renewal
Driving licence photocards must be renewed every 10 years. Driving with an expired photocard technically makes you unlicensed.
Renewal costs 14 pounds online. Typical turnaround is one week.
Medical Conditions
Drivers must inform DVLA of conditions that may affect driving, including epilepsy, insulin-treated diabetes and significant vision impairment. Failure to declare can invalidate insurance.
Speed Awareness Courses
Available as an alternative to fixed penalty notices for qualifying minor offences. Eligibility and availability vary by police force area.
