Child Benefit is a tax-free government payment for people responsible for children under 16.

2026-27 Rates

Eldest or only child: 26.05 pounds per week (1,354.60 per year)

Additional children: 17.25 pounds per week each (897 per year)

The High Income Child Benefit Charge

The HICBC claws back Child Benefit from households where the highest earner has adjusted net income above 60,000 pounds.

Between 60,000 and 80,000 pounds: 1% charge for every 200 pounds of income above 60,000. Above 80,000: full clawback.

Why You Should Claim Anyway

Claim even if affected by the HICBC because it protects your National Insurance record and ensures your child receives an NI number at 16.

How to Claim

Claim online through GOV.UK. Claims can be backdated up to three months. Start the claim as soon as possible after the birth.
