The NHS elective care waiting list in England stands at approximately 6.2 million, down from a peak of 7.7 million but well above pre-pandemic levels.

The 18-Week Standard

You have the right to start treatment within 18 weeks of referral. If your NHS trust cannot meet this, it must offer you an alternative provider, which can include an independent sector hospital.

Regional Variation

Waits vary significantly. Trusts in London and the South East generally perform better on the 18-week target. Some Midlands and Northern trusts have longer waits.

Choosing Your Provider

You have the right to choose where you are referred for outpatient appointments. Use the NHS e-Referral Service to see options. You can specifically request a trust with shorter waits.

The Private Option

For those with private health insurance or who can self-pay, independent sector hospitals often have significantly shorter waits for common procedures. Price transparency has improved, and many offer fixed-price packages.
